Tips for Wine
Gift-Giving
Selecting wines as a gift – the purpose can range from
bringing a bottle or two to a dinner party to selecting the perfect bottle
for that special someone, to finding the right gift for “that person who
has everything.”
Whether the prospect of giving wine excites you or fills
you with fear, there are some guidelines that can help make the process
more enjoyable and fun, no matter what the occasion for the gift.
When you give wine, you are really giving a little bit
of yourself. You’ve spent
time thinking about and shopping for this gift, it’s potentially
something you’ve enjoyed in the past, and you want the recipient to
enjoy it as well.
Characteristics of the Gift
To start this process, think about
the person who’ll be receiving the wine.
Is this person a highly educated and experienced wine drinker, a
novice, or most likely somewhere in between?
Does the person primarily order whites or reds?
Has he or she commented in the past about a particular country,
region or variety of wine? Use
these types of cues as a starting point for your selection.
Next, decide on your price point. You do not need to spend great amounts of money to present a
wonderful bottle of wine. If
you cannot afford $100, don’t spend it.
You can find great value wines in more reasonable price ranges,
with the help of a good wine retailer.
Think about wines you have enjoyed.
You can talk with your retailer about certain types of wine, or
regions, or the qualities of the wines you enjoy.
Obviously, if you have enjoyed the same types of wine with the gift
recipient, that may make the selection process easier.
You also need to think about the time of year, and the
event for the wine (if appropriate).
Some of the specialty wines available for the holidays (such as
cognacs) are too heavy for summertime parties.
For early evening gatherings, or parties on the patio, select a
light, fun wine, not a port. Pinot
Gris/Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc or other Italian whites work well here.
If ethnic considerations apply, you can make a selection
more personalized to a person’s heritage.
For example, Germans can be proud of their heritage, and they
understand white wines. There
are many fine quality white wines that would make lovely gifts for a
German person. Similarly,
theme dinners almost require you to fit the occasion (i.e., Italian
gourmet dinner).
Presentation
A wine label doesn’t matter to
the taste of the gift, but labeling can be significant.
There are many excellent wines being sold under little-known labels
that can create unique, value-based gifts, as long as the “big name”
is not important to the giver or the receiver.
If a certain impression must be made, then go the well-traveled
route, even if you end up paying more for the recognized name.
Finally, decide whether you are giving a combination
gift basket or just the wine. There
are numerous ways to create baskets, with foods, wine accessories, or
flowers. Decide your price
point and adjust accordingly. Many
retailers have wine gift bags that will enhance the presentation, or you
may just prefer a clear plastic wrap with a ribbon or raffia bow.
Conceal the identity with a gift bag.
After you’ve reviewed these types of decisions about
your wine purchase, you can consult with your local retailer to select the
best wine for your gift-giving purpose.
A good retailer will be able to walk you through this process and
help you make the best selection.

Our
Mailing List:
We've
all wondered how it is that organizations get our email address.
Some scan the web, others buy lists of 1000's. We don't agree with
those methods and have no desire to send email to those that would rather
not receive it.
The
mailing list for this newsletter was generated only from the
personal email archives of Wine Expressions' owners. So, if you
don't personally know the owners (Brad Mitchell, Randy Russell, Jack Thew),
someone you know does, because your name was included on an email to one
of us.
We
hope you enjoy the newsletter and decide to remain on our distribution
list. You are welcome to pass this newsletter along to a friend, or
click unsubscribe to
be removed from our lists.
By
the way, we never share your email or address information with anyone
else.
