Wine Drinking and Your Health
Quick,
how many of your favorite foods can you name that don’t qualify as
“guilty pleasures?” Cheesecake?
Not unless it’s low fat. Fettuccini
Alfredo? Not likely. Ben
& Jerry’s? Give me a spoon and show me to the closet.
The news from the nutrition front is often discouraging: the foods
we love best aren’t good for us, and if we indulge, it’s with a guilty
pang and a mental note to atone for our lapses at the gym.
It’s enough to make
you want to indulge yourself with something.
. . something that might actually be good for you.
Like a glass of wine. And
here’s where the good news begins.
A little bit of wine is good for you.
Scientific research conducted over the past 30 years has shown that
moderate consumption of alcohol results in measurable improvements in
human health and longevity. And
wine (particularly red wine) is the beverage offering the widest array of
beneficial ingredients.
What’s so wonderful
about wine (aside from the taste)? Lots
of things, actually. Historically,
wine has been “prescribed” by physicians as an aid to digestion,
nutrient absorption and restful sleep.
But the most exciting
benefit to come to light is the effect of moderate consumption on
cholesterol levels and the incidence of heart disease.
Wine is rich in
flavenoid phenolics, molecular compounds derived from the skins and seeds
of grapes during fermentation. Because
skins and seeds are separated from the juice early in the fermentation
process for white wines, reds contain a much higher concentration of
beneficial flavenoids, especially resveratrol.
An antioxidant, resveratrol has been shown to lower (bad) LDL
cholesterol levels while elevating (good) HDL levels, helping to clear
arterial walls of harmful plaque.
Recently published
research from the Harvard Medical School shows that the resveratrol and
other molecules found in red wine mimic the life-extending benefits of a
calorie-restricted diet, reducing the incidence of cancer, osteoporosis
and heart disease.
These findings lend
scientific credibility and a possible explanation to the "French
Paradox:" they seem to enjoy a diet that includes butter, cheese, liver and other
animal fats without the levels of heart disease seen in the United States.
A critical ingredient appears to be a glass of wine with your meal.
Just a few months ago,
scientists at the University of California, Davis, identified still
another weapon in red wine’s cholesterol-fighting arsenal. Compounds called saponins are believed to bind to and prevent
absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. Saponins were found in significant amounts in soybeans, olive
oil and red wine, with the highest levels occurring in wines with the
highest alcohol content.
This raises another
interesting question: We know
that over-consumption of alcohol brings on a host of health problems,
including increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease,
certain cancers and birth defects. So
what is moderation?
The current
recommendation is to keep it light: no
more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day
for men. Also, most
researchers say if you’re not already a wine drinker, don’t start, so
as to avoid complications. People
who cannot stop drinking once they start, those with a history of
alcoholism in their family, and women who are pregnant should not drink
alcohol.
Some experts recommend a
maximum of three drinks per week for women, five for men, but all agree
that consuming small amounts of alcohol on a regular basis is more
healthful than sporadic consumption of larger quantities, even if the
total consumed is within the limits of “moderation.”
So, with moderation as your guide, raise a glass.
Here’s to your health!
